In many years of entrepreneurial and management work, we had the opportunity to observe, manage, “share the cake” with different profiles of organizations and people. In the framework of these processes, observing the best, wanting to be as good as them or better, the question “what is that something that they have, that positively differentiates them from others” always arose. What is this magical substance that gives organizations and their people strength that enables them to continue to progress, recognize and use opportunities, make money and develop even in very bad and unpredictable circumstances from the environment? It is EXCELLENCE.

Now, the word “excellence” by itself doesn’t mean much. Yes, some are excellent, some are not excellent, but how do you get to excellence? How to develop it, if it can be developed at all? We can say with absolute certainty that excellence is not some innate gene that is the privilege of the few. On the contrary, excellence is a synergy of practices, habits and behaviors that can be learned, developed and improved.

A common remark is that excellence cannot be measured. Totally incorrect. The certificate of authorized evaluator and implementer of excellence according to the EFQM model gives the right to declare that excellence can indeed be analyzed and evaluated, and developed at the level of the organization or partially in separate organizational areas (sales, procurement, finance, marketing, digitalization, …).

Excellence is a broad term. It can be expressed through the words of Goethe:  “Knowledge is not enough, we must apply it. The will is also not enough because we have to put it into action.” Or as former world chess champion Gari Kasparov told in his book “How life imitates chess”: … in business, the most important thing is to “play your game”, to recognize opportunities and threats from the environment, understanding the positions of stakeholders, and respecting opportunities and fundamental values organizations and people, to choose and implement winning strategies. Formal and informal leaders and managers who are able to be students and researchers in today’s business conditions, who are able to escape from boredom and old assumptions, who also have fun and are happy, more easily assume the responsibility of their functions. As servants, teachers and constructors, they encourage creative tension and faith in others that reality can indeed be influenced, act EXCELLENT and create EXCELLENCE.
